Sargassum Fusiforme (Hijiki) is a brown algae that belongs to the Sargassaceae family and grows wild along the rocky coastlines of East Asia in China, Korea, and Japan. Hijiki is an edible seaweed with health promotion effects that has been used in culinary for centuries. It contains many biologically active substances used in medicine and cosmetics.

Sargassum Fusiforme Extract contains dietary fiber, other polysaccharides, polyphenols, carotenoids, plant sterols, and essential elements like iron, magnesium, and calcium. Among polysaccharides, it is rich in alginate, lamiginine, and fucoidan.

Thanks to its unique mineral, polyphenol, and polysaccharide content, Sargassum Fusiforme Extract is used in skin care applications for its moisturizing, nourishing, and antioxidant properties. Some researchers also mention the anti-inflammatory activity of Hijiki extract.

Novel studies revealed a pigmentation-promoting effect of Sargassum Fusiforme Extract. In epidermal melanocytes, it increases the expression of the MITF gene, which is directly involved in melanin production, and during the same study,  tested hair follicle melanocytes where also registered increased tyrosinase activity and enhanced melanin production. This makes Sargassum Fusiforme Extract a safe and natural alternative ingredient for self-tanning, sun-care, and hair re-pigmenting products.
